Who We Are

Lone Star Progressives was organized in 2009 by a handful of individuals who were looking for a forum in which they could share rational, social dialogue regarding current events and local, national and global issues on a non-partisan, non-confrontational basis. This evolved into a quarterly social and informative speaker series over a delicious dinner, with an average of over 100 attendees.

Definition of Progressive

It might be helpful to define what “progressive” and “progressivism” means to us, in a political context. Progressivism is not a specific ideology. It is an attitude toward the world of politics that is far less “black and white” than either liberalism or conservatism. It is a pragmatic system of thought grounded in solving problems and maintaining strong values within society. Progressivism is practical and accepts the reality that the world is dynamic. Progressives see the world for what it is and accept it as ever-changing. Progressives seek the best course of action in line with decidedly American values that offer maximum individual freedoms and help the greatest number of citizens to enjoy those freedoms while achieving their potential. All progressives are not alike, nor will they have the same political priorities – just like many Democrats, Republicans, and Independents often have very distinctive views and individual positions. Progressives are open-minded toward finding the best solutions to any problem. They don’t assume that either government initiatives or private enterprise will always be the best answer. Progressives encourage personal and moral responsibility and promote respect for ethical values. Progressivism is about pragmatism and fairness, two ideas that have been the heart of American politics.
Mission Statement
To provide a regular schedule of social and educational venues for open minded discussion and debate of political issues, and current national and local events and to support worthwhile local charitable organizations.
Support of Local Charities
In the past any profits from these events were donated to a local charity of our choosing. Some of the recipients were Ruth’s Place, Hood County Children’s Charity, Hood County Library, Christian Women’s Job Corps and more. We hope in the future we will be able to resume these donations.
